Since prehistory, we have yearned communion with the Cosmos. The Above - high in the sky, and the Below - deep in the earth, complete the vertical space that is the Cosmos. I reintroduce the Above and Below in multi-family residences to strengthen our connection to the Cosmos. In this way, each unit becomes a threshold space where the mundane activities of daily life are played out along our constant journey through the Cosmos.
The massing challenges the straight stack in terms of efficiency and spatial experience. The final iteration rotates and scales the balcony spaces to interrupt the orientation of the stacked units and “skips beats” to create common caverns of increasing sizes.
Every unit becomes a threshold space where the mundane activities of daily life are played out along our constant journey through the Cosmos.
